These impressive high-denomination Official Stamp proofs date from the 1873–1879 Official Stamp series and were produced for internal approval and archival reference by the U.S. Post Office Department. As plate proofs on card stock, they were never intended for postal use.

The 90¢ value (O56) is especially sought after due to its high denomination and visual impact.
