Own a scarce auxiliary handstamp “NOT CALLED FOR” in red, used in Providence, RI, on advertised inner city Drop-rate cover, ca. 1863-65, with #73 2¢ Black Jack tied by Fancy black segmented cork cancel.
Entered mails AUG. 8 from the U.S. District Attorney’s Office (see preprinted corner card) to Mr. George A. Johnson.
When not retrieved by Mr. Johnson, the cover was advertised in a local Providence newspaper. After a month, the cover was retrieved by addressee (or agent).
The Providence clerk struck a double-circle Providence R.I. SEP 17-dated CDS (with single bar) on the reverse, and crossed out the “Not Called For” in black pencil (the policy at the Prov. P.O. at that time). No contents.
