About This Issue: James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States, rose from poverty to become a Civil War general, nine-term Congressman, and President before being tragically assassinated in 1881. This stamp, issued the following year, is one of the earliest posthumous presidential commemoratives in US philatelic history, printed by the prestigious American Bank Note Company.
