About the Stamps: This beautiful set honors Harriet Powers (1837–1910), a formerly enslaved woman whose narrative quilts are celebrated as masterpieces of American folk art and storytelling. Each of the four stamps features a different panel from her remarkable 1898 "Pictorial Quilt," now held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The quilt depicts Biblical stories, local folklore, and historical events rendered in appliquéd fabric — figures, animals, celestial bodies, and symbols that Powers used to preserve and communicate complex oral histories.
USPS art director Derry Noyes selected panels that translate beautifully to stamp size while honoring the richness and narrative power of Powers' original work. The four designs together capture the full visual range of the quilt — dark dramatic backgrounds, warm earth tones, and Powers' signature figurative style.
